Our History

The Southeastern Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (SCADD) is a community-based organization dedicated to walking alongside individuals and families as they seek healing, stability, and recovery from substance use challenges. Since our founding in 1966, SCADD has been guided by a simple but powerful belief: people deserve care that is compassionate, respectful, and rooted in their own community.

SCADD was established by Attorney Morgan K. McGuire, Dr. Joseph A. Ceha, and Reverend Orin E. Dice, three local leaders who shared a vision of a program created by the community and for the community of Southeastern Connecticut. For six decades, that vision continues to shape everything we do.

We understand that recovery is not a one-size-fits-all journey. Our services are designed to support the whole person — mind, body, and spirit — while honoring each individual’s strengths, experiences, and goals. We believe in meeting people where they are and helping them move forward at their own pace.

While personal commitment plays an important role in recovery, no one should have to do it alone. Connection, encouragement, and trusted relationships are essential. Across all of our programs, we focus on building supportive environments where people feel seen, valued, and empowered.

Over the decades, SCADD has grown to meet the evolving needs of our region, expanding our programs and services while remaining true to the heart of our mission. We are proud to serve Southeastern Connecticut with care that is grounded in dignity, humanity, and hope — today and for generations to come.
